Accessibility

Nassau Hobby Center wants everyone to be able to use this site and to shop with us, whichever way you get here. That includes people using screen readers, magnification, speech input, a keyboard on its own, or no mouse at all.

Accessibility is not something we finished and ticked off. We check it as we build, and we fix what gets reported to us.

We are working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These are the guidelines most widely used to make web content usable by people with disabilities.

We describe this as working toward rather than fully conformant, because parts of this site come from third parties we do not control, and because conformance is something to keep testing rather than to declare once. Where we fall short, we would rather hear about it than claim otherwise.

• A skip to content link as the first thing you reach by keyboard, so you can jump past the header and navigation.
• Keyboard operation — links, buttons, menus and form controls can be reached and used with the Tab and Enter keys, with a clearly visible focus outline on whatever you are on.
• Semantic structure — real headings in order, landmark regions, and lists marked up as lists, so screen readers can navigate the page rather than read it start to finish.
• Labelled form fields. Every input has a proper label attached to it, not just placeholder text that disappears when you start typing.
• Text alternatives for images that carry meaning, and empty alt text on the purely decorative ones so they are skipped rather than announced.
• Text and background colours chosen to meet the WCAG AA contrast minimums.
• Reflow and zoom — the layout adapts down to small screens and up to 200% zoom without content being cut off or requiring sideways scrolling.
• Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the fade-in and scrolling animations are turned off.

We are also happy to take orders over the phone during store hours, pull stock and have it ready, or talk a purchase through with you rather than have you work through the website.

Some things on this site come from outside it and we have less control over them:

• Manufacturer product images and descriptions. Product photography and copy supplied by brands and distributors may not carry good text alternatives.
• Checkout and account pages. These are hosted and controlled by Shopify rather than built by us.
• Embedded third-party tools such as payment and financing widgets.

We also keep a working list of accessibility issues we have found ourselves and have not fixed yet. Having a list is the point — we would rather track them openly than pretend the site is finished.

If any of this stops you completing something, contact us and we will help you finish it another way — including simply doing it for you over the phone.

This site is built to work with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, with screen readers, and with keyboard-only navigation. Older browsers may still work but will not have been tested.
